Akha village The mountainous regions of north and west Thailand are inhabited by several ethnic minorities, often called "the hill tribes". Mother and daughter The Akha live in Thailand, Laos, Burma and Yunnan, but originate from Tibet. The dangling silver ornaments are characteristic for Akha people. Kids and birds With schools present even in very small villages, the literacy rate exceeds 85%. Children learn English at school and from watching television. Bridge over the River Kwai The infamous bridge over the River Kwai (or Khwae) is part of the 'Death Railway' to Burma, build by prisoners of war during the Japanese occupation.
