Very Odd Insect
This picture is taken in the rain forest near Bukit Lawang, Sumatra.
It is a zanna terminalis, a member of the Fulgoridae or planthopper family.
The Dutch name is lantaarndrager, meaning 'lantern bearer'.
Date: 26-6-1997, morning.

Squirrel
The Dutch name is grijze eekhoorn, the scientific name sciurus carolinensis.
This type of squirrel is introduced in England in the 19th century.
As usually this appeared to be a bad idea.

Room-mate
Small Village in the Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan, China.
This spider walked around in my bedroom. The image size is 72x48 mm.
On the original slide you can count the hairs on its body and legs...

This odd insect is a fly, not a bee, although they live from nectar too.
The Dutch name is Wolzwever, the scientific (family) name Bombyliidae.
The picture size is about 72 x 48 mm.

Praying mantis
The Dutch name is Bidsprinkhaan, the scientific (family) name Mantodea.
Often a praying mantis tries to attack the camera.
A spooky sight in the viewfinder!

This beetle is a long-horned beetle. The scientific family name is
Cerambycidae, in The Netherlands we call them boktorren.
The picture is taken in Sarangan, Java, Indonesia.

Who's afraid of...
This is a member of the orb-weaver or Araneidae family. In The Netherlands
we call them wielspinnen and the are very common world wide.

This a milkweed butterfly. The scientific name is Danaus Plexippus.
It is a member of the Danaidae family and for birds it tastes aweful.
The Dutch name is monarch vlinder.

Unlucky mouse
This mouse was smashed by the cover of the garbage can outside my house.
An bizarre coincidence. I discovered the mouse a day later.
