Utrecht Utrecht is founded by the Romans in the year 48 as Ultrajectum. In 1122 the city obtained the so called city-rights, which allowed the city to dig canals. Werfkelder The major is canal called Oude Gracht meaning "old canal". It dates from the beginning of the 12th century. In the following centuries the water level lowered several meters, that's why canals in Utrecht have two shores. Equipment: kodacolor gold 100, Olympus OM1, Zuiko 35-70 mm F4. |

Drenthe With 172 inhabitants per square kilometer, Drenthe is not very densely populated compared to the rest of The Netherlands. Walking around for hours without seeing other people is still possible here. Like in other parts of the country, semi wild cows are used to preserve the landscape. Bloemgracht Amsterdam originates from the dam and locks at the mouth of the river Amstel, which were build in the second half of the 13th century. Oudezijds Voorburg Wal The Oudezijds Voorburg Wal is one of the oldest canals of Amsterdam. It is dug in 1342. In 1612, during the Golden Age, the major canals were planned. Westerkerk The Westerkerk is designed by Hendrick de Keyser in 1619. The oldest church in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk, dating back to 1334.
